Create video using Kaltura in Sakai

Kaltura allows faculty, students, and staff at Rutgers to create or upload videos to a streaming server, which makes sharing them easy for everyone. You could think of our Kaltura server as Rutgers own YouTube-like service.

To create new videos to share from your Sakai sites:

  1. Log into Sakai and click the first “My Workspace” tab
  2. From the left-hand menu, click “Kaltura My Media” link (this should show you all your videos on the RU-Stream Kaltura server)
  3. Click the “Add New” button at the top right of the screen
  4. Select “Create Recording”
  5. CaptureSpace screenshotIf this is the first time you’ve created a recording with Kaltura, you’ll need to download the CaptureSpace software
  6. If you’ve already installed CaptureSpace, wait a moment or two and it will launch automatically
  7. Select the combo you’d like to record, for instance, “screen” (note all options include audio from mic)
  8. Choose to record your full screen or just a selected area (which will require clicking “select area” to specify the window to record)
  9. You’ll get a 5-second countdown before the recording starts
  10. Press <alt>-p to pause the recording
  11. Click Done (or cancel if necessary!)
  12. The new video will immediately play back; click Done in the bottom right corner of the screen
  13. Type the name of your new video and click Upload to save it to the Kaltura streaming server
  14. The video will now appear in the Kaltura My Media page from your Sakai “My Workspace” site
  15. You can then download the original video file as an mp4 to submit as an assignment.
